New free fonts available on Mac OS Catalina
Few days ago I have discovered an interesting fact. Apple recently obtained the license for additional free fonts that are now available on Mac OS Catalina. Probably many users didn’t notice about it, as the fonts are not going to be installed automatically. The first to be reporting this has been Typography Guru, advising that Apple added new free fonts in its operating system. We can now use more new fonts from the source like Commercial Type, Klim Type Foundry, and Mark Simonson Studio.
Here the list of the font families and the individual fonts that are available for free download:
How to download free fonts
If you open the Font Book on your Mac and press the “All Fonts” tab on the top left side, you can see that some fonts in the list are greyed out.
What you have to do is just select the greyed out font in the list, and right click on it. You will see the option “Download (font name)”, click on it and it will prompt a message that will ask if you want to download the selected font. Press the “Download” button and… you will have the new font. Easy.
Very easy procedure, but if you are not aware about the new fonts, well… Now that you know, I suggest too open your Font Book and download these new fonts. Personally the Proxima Nova is my favorite from this list, I have used it some time ago in a project and in a logo design, I am happy to have it in the system as before I have had to synchronize it from the Adobe Fonts.
There are also additional non latin fonts available for download, you can see the full list in this official Apple support document.
